Brown Grass Questions and Answers
Open Question: Well-written, or totally confusing?
An excerpt from chapter 3 of my novel: It happened fast. I was tackled to the ground from behind just as my right foot hit the pallid brown-tiled floor of the bathroom. I wheezed and tried to crawl away, but I couldn't. I had dragged myself barely an inch when I another force slammed right below my shoulderblade, rendering me immobile. Unable to react, the stranger flipped me onto my back with solid hands that were burning up. My body felt the same, adrenaline shooting through my veins from head to toe. The man- yes, it was a man- pinned me down and stared straight at me for a split-second, sizing me up. He wasn't wearing all black like you'd expect, and it didn't seem like he was trying to hide his identity at all, either. He was wearing light blue jeans and a white t-shirt, with a bright green overcoat. If I didn't know any better, I'd say he was trying to stand out, not the other way around. His face was revealed, too. Ashen blonde hair that looked white under the neon movie theater lights, and green eyes. Like, actually green. Like the inside of a fresh kiwi right when you bite into it, or grass the day after a thunderstorm. Not some fake hazel that people claim to be green because they don't want to admit that their eyes look like puke; real green. "Wh-" I'd hardly gotten out one syllable when my other shoulderblade was shoved in. I groaned. Rolling over to try and get away would be pointless, I realized. He would just jab his fist into my stomach as soon as I was flat on my back, and probably knock me unconscious. I pondered that thought for a second, and figured that I could get away from this. It was like a chess match. You have to think ahead. I took about 10 seconds to think about how he would most likely hit me while trying to escape, how I would block him, and his next move after that, and how I would block that, and so on and so forth. But he finished thinking before I did. Mister green-coat slammed a fist right above where I'm guessing my right lung was, and all air was knocked out of my body. If I was thinking straight, I probably would've gone with my rolling over plan. But when he hit me like that, I got mad. I sprung up and slugged him in the face, and the only reason I got away with it was because he wasn't expecting me to rise so soon after a beating like that. It was stupid, thus unlikely, thus the perfect move to make. But mister green-coat got his wits back together pretty quickly. And my unlikely move just made him more furious. He aimed a slow blow at my forearm, which was only too easy to block. But that hit was only to distract me from his next move. He'd thought ahead, and I hadn't. Oops. His right leg jerked up quickly and knocked me to the ground by bending my knee inward. I fell flat on my back and rolled over, but his knee pinned my back to the ground, and the stranger landed a blow to the side of my head, banging it on the ground forcefully. I tried raising my arm to deflect another hit, but I was hurt. My vision started getting splotchy. It started fading. moreOpen Question: What Do You Think Of My Story......So Far?
Well, I'm trying to write a novel and I was wondering what people thought of it so far. I would like your honest opinion please... here it is: I look out the window. The wind seems to throw it’s self at the house. I jump and stumble back into my dresser as something slams against my window. A branch had been lunged at my window by that violent wind. I breathe a sigh of relief, and put a hand over my chest to ease my racing heart. I turn around and glance at myself in the mirror. My chubby cheeks are flushed bright red, almost matching the color of my red frizzy hair that seems to stand on end. It’s like I had seen a ghost. But no all I had seen was my reflection, which is just as frightening. To me any way. I go downstairs and find my mum in the kitchen. “What are you doing up so early?” I ask her, it was twelve, so I guess you couldn’t really call it early but on weekends and holiday’s mum and I stay in bed almost all day. “I think I could ask you the same thing,” she looks at me questionably. “I was going to meet my friends at the park but I think we’re just going to go to the shops. I mean have you seen what it’s like outside.” “Good point, ok you can go out,” “Great, thanks mum” I grab my coat. “Wait aren’t you going to have breakfast?” “Nah, I think I’ll have something to eat at a café.” “Okay then, I’ll see you later.” I shove on my coat and run out the door. I was already five minutes late. Its times like this that I wish I had a phone. Then again, I always wish that I had a phone, but mum was never the biggest fan of kids having phones. Luckily the park is just a few blocks away from my house. It’s not the kind of park that you would imagine. It just has two swings and a rusty round about. There are bushes and trees but mostly it’s just over grown grass. I see Lizzie and Jack waving to me. They’re twins and do almost everything together. “You’re here,” they say in unison. “Yes, I’m here. Where’s Allison?” I ask, “You know what she’s like, she is always late,” states Lizzie. “Yeah, she probably went into a shoe store because there was a sale,” agrees Jack. Just then Allison walks over to us with a paper bag in her perfectly manicured hands. “Sorry I’m late, there was a shoe sale, and there were just the most amazing shoes that I had to get.” We all laughed apart from Allison, who looked confused. “What? What’s so funny,” that just made us laugh more. Allison was a shopaholic and we all new it. “Right so, what are we going to do now?” asks Jack. “We can go to the mall.” Jack groans but Lizzie and I agree with Allison. “But we always…” “Three against one, we win” I say laughing. “Great, to the mall it is,” Allison sounds so happy it makes me want to laugh. “Didn’t you just go to a shop, like, half an hour ago?” Jack asks Allison, “What’s your point?” “Never mind,” Jack sighs. We walk out of the park. The wind is blowing my hair so fiercely that when I get indoors it’s going to like there was an explosion in my head. I wish I had hair like Lizzie. Her long, silky brown hair was blowing softly in the wind, unlike mine that was blowing every where. Lizzie wasn’t skinny but she wasn’t fat. She was more-chubby, but she was confident. I wish I had a body like Lizzie or better yet like Ali, she was curvy but in all the right places. We walk into the mall, “Lets get something to drink before we go anywhere else,” says Jack hopefully. “Ok, great” I say. We walk over to our favorite café ‘Viva La Coffee’ and I order a strawberry smoothie. Jack orders some coke ditto Lizzie and Allison orders seven-up and a slice of double chocolate cake. That’s what really annoys me; Allison can eat like a pig and never get any fatter. I stare at her enviously. “Stop looking at me like that Roxy, your making me feel like I’m eating a person.” “Sorry, sorry. I’ll stop now.” After about fifteen minutes we agree, well Jules, Allison and Jack agree, that we will split up and shop by ourselves and in an hour we will meet up outside McDonalds. They want to buy me birthday presents. “But guys, what will I do for an hour, buy myself a gift?” I ask desperate for them not to leave. “You can look around, try things on. Whatever, we have to get you a gift, your birthday is in a week,” says Jack “Get them another time,” I say. “Were all to busy to get them another time.” Allison says. I raise my eyebrows. I know that there not doing anything all this week. They all look at me pleadingly. I give in. “Fine you win,” I say. “Yay,” Allison jumps up and down clapping her hands. I know she’s 16 but sometimes she acts a lot younger. I sigh. “Okay, get out of here you lot. You better get me good presents,” I say laughing. I stay at the table for awhile and sip on a fresh strawberry smoothie. Twenty minutes later I finally get bored and go up to McDonalds. I find a seat and sit down, but not before I make sure there is nothing on it. Someone sits down beside me. “Oh I’m sorry; these seats are for my friends.” I say as I look up. A boy with black floppy hair and dark brown eyes is sitting opposite me. I hold my breath praying that I won’t say anything to embarrass myself. “Well, your friends don’t seem to be here yet, so I’ll sit here for now.” He says smiling. “I’m Liam by the way. And you are?” “I’m, I was. Just uh… here. Hi.” Liam chuckles “Sorry?” I breathe deeply and start again. “I’m Roxy,” thank goodness I got it right this time. What do you think so far? is there any way i can improve it? do you think this novel has potentiol to make it? thanks in advance =) moreOpen Question: My Fantasy Story So Far....?

It's not painful, not itching, and this has happened once before since I've moved to North Carolina. The fang marks are approx. 1 - 2 cm apart, and though it's not serious, I wondered what kind of spider (or insect) has enough venom to create a bruise and scabs over each fang puncture, but not enough venom to create any other effects or sicknesses. In this area there are a lot of grass spiders that make their webs in tall grass, some black widows and brown recluses. I'm not sure of what other spiders there are. Any ideas, anyone? And my mother said to put medicated powder around my bed, to keep away spiders. I can not spray because I have a bird. Does anyone have any recommendations to keep away spiders? moreOpen Question: Is this well-written, or totally confusing?

My road is fenced with the bleached, white bones And strewn with the blind, white sand, Beside me a suffering, dumb world moans On the breast of a lonely land. On the rim of the world the lightnings play, The heat-waves quiver and dance, And the breath of the wind is a sword to slay And the sunbeams each a lance. I have withered the grass where my hot hoofs tread, I have whitened the sapless trees, I have driven the faint-heart rains ahead To hide in their soft green seas. I have bound the plains with an iron band, I have stricken the slow streams dumb! To the charge of my vanguards who shall stand? Who stay when my cohorts come? The dust-storms follow and wrap me round; The hot winds ride as a guard; Before me the fret of the swamps is bound And the way of the wild-fowl barred. I drop the whips on the loose-flanked steers; I burn their necks with the bow; And the green-hide rips and the iron sears Where the staggering, lean beasts go. I lure the swagman out of the road To the gleam of a phantom lake; I have laid him down, I have taken his load, And he sleeps till the dead men wake. My hurrying hoofs in the night go by, And the great flocks bleat their fear And follow the curve of the creeks burnt dry And the plains scorched brown and sere. The worn men start from their sleepless rest With faces haggard and drawn; They cursed the red Sun into the west And they curse him out of the dawn. They have carried their outposts far, far out, But -- blade of my sword for a sign! -- I am the Master, the dread King Drought, And the great West Land is mine! 1. how does the poet make the dread king appear human? 2. what powers does the dread king posess? 3. explain the meaning of 'a suffering dumb world moans" 4. what is the meaning of "and the breath of the wind is a sword to slay"? 5. what do u learn abt the character of king drought from the words: "i have bound the plains with an iron band"? 6. why does the poet speak of the streams as "dumb"? 7. wat do u learn abt the character of king drought from the following words? "i lure the swagman out of the road to the gleam of a phamtom lake" 8. "and the great west land is mine!" why does the king drought believe this? 9. what words in the poem suggest that king drought is a warrior engaged in battle? 10. do you think the poet wrote this poem from personal experience or not? give reasons for your viewpoint. 11. wat are the issues or themes of the poem? 12. summarise your ideas abt the poem thnx sooooo much. also links tht would help will be greatly appreciated. :) points will also be rewarded moreOpen Question: Is it possible to get a birthmark at 16?
Ok so last week i noticed a discolored spot on my inner thigh but i just thought it was a bruise coming in. The next day, i went to our cabin that we have in Kansas (i live in Texas) were its all woody and tall grass and ticks (got a couple), etc. and it started turning brown and more like a birthmark than a bruise. I doubt if the environment had anything to do with it, but there you go. And also, on the opposite side of the same leg, there is another mark that is a lighter brown but still looks like a birth mark. How could i get a birthmark at 16?!! The first one that i mentioned has the length of a pencap and the width of a thumbnail. The second one i swear was a bruise cuz i thought i scraped the same area on my bed post while packing for kansas but its more curved, thin, and has the length of my middle finger. That one looks like it will fade but im really not sure now... wow this is weird lol. Thanks in advance! WOW I know that your born with a birthmark jeese! Im not a freakin idiot my gosh! Im just saying it looks EXACTLY like a birth mark. Im not saying it IS a birthmark! Thats why its so weird cuz it truely looks like a birthmark like ive had it my whole life. Dang it i was just trying to get peopls attention but i didnt expect retarded answers! Dang Thank you though to the people who acutally told me something useful like it might be cancer. I really dont think it is though, i hope not... ugh this sucks! huh well this was the biggest waste of a question! I was wondering if those are bruising or not. here are some pics but they're kinda nasty...... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3388/3623204244_91ff89288b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3372/3622402009_8b4f60ef3f.jpg please help! moreOpen Question: can somebody please read this and review, its 603 words.?
I have to write a 500 (minimum) word essay from the dads perspective in "Z for Zachariah" when he goes into Ogdentown and then to Dean town. I'm in year 9. the start of my story is a little bit rushed. All the radio stations are dropping out, people have stopped driving through our little town and we don’t know what is going on. The telephones have gone dead. Myself, my son and my nephew, we’re going to drive to the next town, to see if anybody there knows what is going on. We will go tomorrow. We’re half way there, everything is dead, the grass is all dead, no trees are alive there aren’t any animals. As we drive into town, we blast the horn, there are a couple of bodies lining the streets. The buildings are still standing. We went into a few of our friends houses, they were there… all dead. It is horrible, not knowing what happened to them, if they suffered a long, slow painful death, if they were poisoned we don’t know what happened to them. Joseph suggests that we could go to the church and ring the bell there, it can be heard for five miles every direction of the church. We drive slowly towards the church, calling blasting the horn, nothing, absolutely nothing. As we approach the church we see more bodies, dead unmoving. We ring the bells at the church, every five minutes, waiting for two hours, we sit, unmoving just thinking, taking in what he have seen and what we wished we hadn’t. Nobody came, we are driving back. It has gotten dark, but as we come back over the ridge we can see the light in the windows in the house. As we pull up my wife comes out with my daughter, Ann. Concern written across their faces. “What did you find?” my wife asks, watching as I climb out of the truck, “bodies. Just dead bodies. They’re all dead.” “all” I walked back into the house, the lamps were lit, the two boys followed me, they looked more distressed than I felt. I begin to explain what he had experienced, but I couldn’t I was so scared, and worried, what had killed them, were we going to die? “terrible” I said it over and over. “Terrible, terrible. We drove around looking, we blew the horn. Then we went to the church and rang the bell. You can hear it five miles away. We waited for two hours, but nobody came. I went to a couple of houses - the Johnsons’, the Peter’s – they were all in there, all dead. There were dead birds all over the streets. At that point, the stress became too much for my son Joseph, he began to cry. He is 14, I can’t remember him crying since he was 8. I have spoken to Mr. Klein, and we have decided to drive in the opposite direction tomorrow, we will be driving south. To go and see if the Amish communities are still alive, then we will circle west to dean town, passing through Baylor on the way. Dean town is a real city, it has a population of 20,000 people, it is a lot bigger that Ogdentown. We will leave early tomorrow morning, so we can get to dean town before dark. We will find out what has happened, then we will come back the next day. My wife is coming with me and so is my nephew David. We will take two cars, in case one breaks down. It is 6:00 o’clock am, the sun is not up yet. We have just said goodbye to Ann and Joseph and are on our way. As we leave the green of our valley and enter the yellow brown outside, we make ourselves comfortable for the long drive ahead. moreVoting Question: how to prevent foxes pooing in the garden?

In the book, Seekers: Smoke Mountain , by Erin Hunter, the main problem is that Lusa (black bear), Kallik (polar bear), Toklo, and Ujurak (brown bears) need to get to The Last Great Wilderness, and the journey is long and very hard. The solution is teamwork: they all work together and help each other to survive and to get there. Now you will find out about some stuff that happened. Some events that form the rising action are: Taqqiq, Kallik's long lost brother, is forced to leave the team, and they meet an old bear named Qopuk who said that he knew someone who has been to The Last Great Wilderness, and told them what he heard. Stories of giant flat-faces (humans) that live on Smoke Mountain, which is part of the way to the L.G.W. He also told them that Smoke Mountain is called 'smoke' because wisps of smoke come out of it's ground. The giant flat-faces live there and burn bears. Then they eat them. This had frightened everyone, but they traveled on. I would think that the climax of the story would be when Lusa gets run over by a fire-beast (a car). When she and Kallik were walking through a nest of flat-faces and big yellow fire-beasts with claws, (a construction site in the middle of nowhere), one of the fire-beasts rolled backwards and ran over Lusa! Everyone is afraid that Lusa is dying, but she wakes up. When she was still unconscious, she had a dream when her parents told her that she mustn't die; she must save the wild! The falling action is mostly made up by: they all get safly out of Smoke Mountain, and they travel in a medow for a very long time. It is the first time since The Great Bear lake that they had actually seen grass and real food. They also find the L.C.W.! I really liked this book because it is about bears. It is also a really great example on the effect of Global Warming, since it is basically the perspective of bears. I suggest this book to you if you like talking animals and adventure. But first you might want to read the first two books in this series! moreResolved Question: critique my writing please?
Sometimes i guess i hate getting inspired cause i leave off a really good story i had started before and start a new one. This was written within like the last fifteen minutes [my microsoft is crashing and my mouse wont work on it so i couldnt correct my errors sorry] Sorry if its long... Sitting atop his stoop, gazing upon the white land he came to know and love, Oliver noticed his world depleting. He had lived here, alone, not knowing where he came from, not understanding who he was, only having the distinct urge to run his fingers along the smooth white surfaces. That was what Oliver did, for hours and hours letting his soft fingers become tough and ridden with calluses. But Oliver had a much more unique talent then that one, as he wandered living in his bland world, he once saw an end. Where the white would stop and it would become dark and misty slowly fading into a deep world Oliver dared never to explore. Sometimes he would go back to the edge, curiosity, maybe, only to see the darkness overcoming the bright white. Oliver worried more and more his world would come to an end, bringing him to sit on the floor and move his fingers making pictures. He could see them, but as he blinked they would vanish, his wonderful pieces gone, and he would start again with something new. But one day as the darkness was just as far as the eye could see, coming much closer then ever before, tears filled his eyes and he drew. The blues and greens spilling from his fingertips enchanted the floor beneath. As he wiped his eyes he realized that these pictures wouldn't disappear as he looked away or blinked, they stayed in view no matter how long he looked away. Oliver used his skills to build a new world, forcing the darkness far away. He drew grass and fences and small cream houses, buildings with dome roofs and gardens with yellow roses. He wouldn't stop until he was finished, finished painting the windows to each house, the locks on each door, the lace curtains for each golden window sill, the spilling fountains made of only the finest stone. As Oliver grew, so did his art, becoming more and more real. The waterfalls crashing in to the water below splashing rainbows in the sprinkling mist, the wind brushing against the shutters veering the silence from his ears, developing into reality. Oliver made birds that sung sweet lullabies and fish that had scales that turned all colors as the sun rose into and left the blue sky. Though, as Oliver grew and his hearing of the birds singing and the water splashing faded and the smell of bread roasting and the rainbows that grew across the sky became dull, Oliver felt something was missing. No matter how many roses he added to an ivy wall or how ever many golden brown buttered rolls he drew just barely coming out of the roaring stove fire he couldnt fill it. Oliver grew old, seeking vigurously for the thing he needed, drawing anything that came to mind to perfect his world. Soon all that was left of poor Oliver was the wrinkled man sitting in a large detailed arm chair pulstered with blue silk cushion in front of what was left of a roaring flame. The embers crackled just loud enough for his old ears to pick up and the roasting smell just barely lingered in his drooping nose. His mind thinking, though too jumbled to make any sense, as his pointer carved a deep hole into his chair. No color came, just the dull scraping of his fingernail. That was it. MORE INFO gotta ask, i was confused. In the begining, right? it says came... should that be come? and like the birds who sung ... should that be sang? idk ... im bad at that sorta thing. and with that whole than then thing. little help with that. This is an intro to like a fantasy more as story and this is the story of how they came to be, like a kids story. And this girl finds that darkness is comeing back... somthing like that... YOU DONT HAVTA READ IT ALL!!!! really. just comment on however much [i just put up all i wrote cause like... sometimes people always ask why io stopped where i did. so i just added it all. moreResolved Question: I really need help with my story. This is a rough start of a chapter and I'm asking on how I could improve and if you have any ideas please mention them. Please help with names for the story too.... 1. THE ROCK I slammed my foot on the pedal and the car jolted forward underneath me. The night was dark, a thin layer of cloud covered the sky. I could still hear him in the back of my mind, previously pleading with me through the small cell phone that lay on the passenger seat. "Rubes where are you? I'm sorry okay?" I knew Jacob too well to know that he'd eventually follow me. That I was positive. I eventually made it back Noah's. His new Range Rover was parked neatly in the garage. Noah and I lived in the small two bedroomed house that our father grew up in. I fitted the key in the lock of the door and shoved it open. Noah was asleep upstairs, snoaring loudly. My legs were stiff but I wasn't tired enough to fall asleep. I sat on the small couch that was pushed into the corner of the living room, late night TV adverts flashed in the background. The phone rang. I scrambled from the couch, rushing into the kitchen. "Hello?" I answered the phone. "It's me Rubes," Jacob said happily, "You got home safely then?" "I'm fine Jacob." "Good cause we're going out tomorrow." "What? No! I'm not going with you, Jacob." "Yeah, okay, I'll pick you up around noon." "No! I'm not going with -----" "Bye Rubes." I sighed loudly, knowing that no matter how much of a fight I put up, Jacob would be here in the morning. I hurried through my cassserole, barely tasting it's roasting hot peices on my pallet. I trudged up the stairs, fretting about Jacob's morning plans. Maybe he'd forgotten our fight this afternoon. Or maybe he was just being ignorant. I woke late, my body felt strangely stiff beneath the duvet covers. I looked at the digital clock that sat on my bedside table. 11:45am. Jacob would be here soon, being as persistant and cheerful as ever. When I was cleaned up, I went back to the kitchen. Noah was at work so the rest of the house was completely quiet. I took a small bowl from the cupboard and filled it with cereal. Jacob burst in the door before I could finish. "Hey Rubes," he said, a large smile lighting up his face. "You've never heard of knocking, have you Jacob?" He shrugged and pulled out a chair from the table for himself. "You're not ready yet?" he said, his tone slightly annoyed. "I didn't actually plan on going anywhere today," I said while washing my cereal bowl under the running water. "Whatever," he said, still smiling cheekily, "Get your jacket, it might rain," Jacob lightly grabbed my wrist, pulling me toward his jeep outside and sitting me inside. "Jake!" I said, pulling my hand free from his and swinging my legs back out from the jeep, "Stop." He took a small step back from me, but not far enough that I could make a run for it. There was a small crease between his eyebrows that he seemed unaware of. "You don't remember do you Jake? Or are you just being very ignorant?" I demanded, pushing his hands from mine. "Ruby -----" I tried hard to push past him but I wasn't able to manouver around him. His large brown eyes caught mine and he smiled weakily. "We can't Jake, not now," I said harshly, knowing that he'd listen to these critical words. "Not ever," he whispered. "Jake, I'm no good for you, go love..." "Someone? Anyone? Just not you eh Ruby?" he said fiercly, breaking his hold on my shoulders and taking several paces backwards. I stared at my feet, a wave of guilt washing over me. "Jake!" I said croakily, my eyes welling with tears, "I didn't mean it like that..." He was heavily pacing the garden now, wearing the grass down to a muddy surface. "But you meant it Ruby, right?" he said, his voice close to a shout. I knew he wasn't expecting an answer, and I didn't plan on giving him one. "Jacob ---" "No Ruby, it's okay, I get it," he said fiecly, moving toward the drivers seat of his jeep. His face was no longer smooth, his forehead was creased and his lips were in a thin line. He pulled out of the drive without saying anything more, it was exactly what had happened last night except he was the angry one now. I couldn't stand hurting Jake, I did love him. He was my best friend, my rock. I couldn't tell how long he'd be angry for, Jacob wasn't very predictable. I would absoutley love to write a novel but I am not even 15 yet so I don't think I could as I wouldn't know how to I have read Twilight when it came out but not since then and I haven't read New Moon so I don't really see what ye mean There was meant to be a break between morning and night but I just fogot to put it in I AM NOT SURE WHERE TO SET THIS STORY? My husband and I just moved into a home in Atlanta and are having grass issues. I have no idea what type of grass we have, but I'll try to describe it. When we moved in the front yard was gorgeous and the back yard was spotty. This grass was soft, dark green, and about 6 inches long. Uncut, the grass did not stick up but rather leaned over and thus did not look long - it was more like a "mane" of grass, very field like. So we cut it on Sunday and left the grass cuttings on top to enrich the yard. Now we have lots of brown patches sprouting up in both the front and back yards. We haven't watered it yet since it's been raining pretty regularly - not sure if it has in the last few days though. So what are we doing wrong here? This is our very first yard by the way. Do we need to water? Does cut grass require more water? We are ignorant on the subject and any info would be greatly appreciated! moreResolved Question: Ornamental grasses, when to cut back dead leaves?

My boyfriend and I just rented a new house together. Huge front and backyard with gardens in the front and back. I have always lived in apartment communities where i have never had to take care of a lawn let alone a garden! We moved into this house about a month ago now and parts of the lawn are getting brown/yellow. The plants that are in the garden are dying. I don't have time to water every single day, I am helping my man run a business. So I have a couple questions: 1. Do lawns and gardens need to be watered everyday? (I didn't even know what kinds of plants I have growing here!) 2. Once the plants do die, do they still grow back? 3. Once grass starts to die and I water every other day, do I have a chance to save it? Please help! Any basic gardening tips would help me out soo much! Alex Lumberfield was a young man in his twenties, with short, spiked brown hair and deep blue eyes. He always smelled as if he had just come out of the shower, the smell of shampoo thick in the air. Alex was a man with a dream: a dream to become rich. As a result, he quickly realised that farming was not for him. He had once heard that businessmen were the most likely people to earn over seventy thousand pounds. So he decided that was the way for him. After being interviewed several business companies, all of them had turned him down with the same phase; “Unfortunately, we are in no need of another employee”. One of the recruitment managers went even as far as to say; ”You are the lat employee we would ever dream of employing!” She was a tall thin lady in her early sixties. She had a fixed grimace on her face as she interviewed me and her eyes were a pale gray. Alex had been so sure that at least one of the recruiting managers would hire him, that he had sold his old farming house, and replaced it with a one-bedroom flat in central-London As the days passed, and with still no source of income, he began to think about stealing from people to get at least some sort of income… There were of course two problems: he would need to be able to sell the items to someone, and he would have to take a risk of getting caught… Chapter 1 That smell… Oh! That wonderful smell! Standing up, I searched around me for the source of the amazing aroma. Instead, I saw nothing. I could see a few trees in the silvery moonlight, their branches entwined with the silvery strings of light. The icy winds pounded against the earth, flattening the grass. I was alone… As it began to sink in that this mysterious smell would never be revealed; a glistening beam of light appeared in front of me. It drew me in. I was hypnotised by that light. I moved closer to the light, the smell becoming more powerful. I drew in within a few centimetres. Without warning, the beam of light vanished in a blink of an eye. In its place, stood a towering plate of pancakes, each one, a deep golden circle. The smell was extraordinary! Each pancake must have had a different filling inside, each made to perfection. I reached out for a single pancake, my fingers outstretched. My eyes had a look of madness within them. I thought of nothing but seizing one, each as unforgivable as the next. I was suddenly pulled from the mysterious reality; realising once again, that I was in a familiar bed. Each dream was the same, was I destined to become a thief? Or was it a warning? I lay back down and tried to sleep once more. Twisting and turning, I realised it was impossible. Instead, I ended up lying there, thinking about the questions that had formed inside my head… As I thought, the extraordinary aroma filled my nose again. I lifted my head, and glanced out the window, the sun shone intensely in the sky. The birds chirped softly in the woods, behind my small back garden. But the fragrance was still there... I looked around, noticing small streams of vapour, rising into the sky. I quickly identified where the smell was coming from. A steaming plate of apple crumble stood on Miss Ellendale's window ledge. I turned my head sharply, checking to see if Miss Ellendale was in her garden, however there wasn’t a sign of life. Odd, I thought. The garden was normally filled with life. “Maybe she had finally decided to give it a rest?” I said out loud. My stomach gave a lurch, leaving me with ravenous hunger. I leaped into my clothes, silently creeping out of the house. As quietly as possible, I crawled towards Miss Ellendale’s garden, through the alleyway, ready for the perfect apple crumble. I gently pushed open the gate, making sure that Miss Ellendale couldn't see me. As I swiftly took it from its resting place, I saw, just how perfect it was. A deep shade of perfect gold shined off of it, the small crumbles glittered magnificently in the sunlight. As I stood there admiring it, Miss Ellendale‘s voice could be heard, screaming for help. She must have seen me! Without a second thought, I grabbed the apple crumble and sprinted like a gazelle, fleeing rapidly into my house. This was the first thing I ever stole... Chapter 2 I had the same dream again, but this time I actually managed to grab one of the pancakes. The pancake felt like silk in my hands. I tried to take a bite out of it, but the pancake had suddenly become very hard. I looked at it carefully and realised that the pancake become a gold necklace, sparkling in the moonlight. A real, pure gold necklace! My mind was racing. I began thinking how much I could sell it for but then… I woke up in that all to familiar bed. “Why?!” “Why couldn’t that dream have been real?!” Well, in a way it could… I had now worked out the answers to my questions! The feeling of finally solving the puzzle that had been buzzing in my head since yesterday was indescribable. The moreResolved Question: Bermuda Grass Maintainance in TX?
There's already a lot of grass but it's starting to die out for some reason. After every time we mow the grass, a small patch turns brown and then it seems to be spreading like a disease. I'm thinking it's because the mower's blades are dull, but it's fairly new so I'm not sure if that's the problem. We water everyday (I've read we should water less frequently but the grass is already fully developed and in it's peak stages because we mow the lawn every week.) We use fertilizer every month or so. Also, the soil seems to be having a lot of cracks like it's dry or something. We water very frequently and it costs a lot already. How much/frequently should we water? My sister is an amazing poet but she doesn't have much faith in herself and she's very shy. I was wondering what you thought of one of her poems: The colors that stare out from their box's front cover have personalities that shine like dimes in the dew, and when you set my pencils free they are louder than a train and brighter than stars on your paper all to make your lakeshores a little more blue and your eyes a little more brown, all to make your grass more than placid mold drawings and your yellow house with the red roof a little more friendly. Last week I put down my step 2 fertilizer, and I think my spreader was set to high and dispensed more fertilizer than necessary. Now, my lawn is burnt, (tinted brown, with a spots of dead grass) Will the dead spots grow back at all this year? Will my grass grown back and be green again this year? Will my step 3 in about 7 weeks help grow it back? I live in CT. This sucks. Any advice, comments, suggestions? Thanks in advance. moreResolved Question: I layed sod over screening but put about 2" of soil on top. Was it enough for the grass to survive?
I had a backyard of all patio stones. Underneath the stones was screening. I put a few bags of soil on top of the screening. Probably about 1.5 to 2" of soil. Then I layed fresh sod (grass) down. I did this about a week ago. So far the grass is mostly green but I have a small 4" brown spot/dry grass spot, and at the edge the one area of sod is actually lifting up still (if I pick it up). Does this mean it isn't taking? Will it be all for nothing? Did I not put enough soil on underneath? :( Please help and answer. :) Thanks Boston S! It's good to hear from a pro! :) The rest of the grass is really green. I think if it wasn't bonding to the soil at all it would be brown all over? I have been watering it every 3 days since I put it down. That's only 2 times so far in a week and then today. So I will now water it every other day. :) moreResolved Question: can we be evicted for this?
first off, i live in bc, canada, for anyone who knows tenant rights here. and sorry for this being so long. ok, last august we moved into this house. it's a 2-story, 3 bedrooms up, 2 bdrms down, 2 1/2 baths, 2 fireplaces, large backyard. we pay $2000/month rent (does not include utilities, we pay for our own hydro and gas). when we moved in here we payed $1000 for damage deposit, plus another $500 for pet deposit b/c we had a dog (we no longer have the dog). so anyways, last week our landlord came to collect the rent. my husband and i weren't home so my mom (who lives in the basement suite) gave him the money. usually when he comes over he doesn't check in every room, especially mine and my husbands bedroom. this time he checked in every room. our room was a mess with clothes b/c i had gotten behind on the laundry...there was 3 baskets full of clean clothes that needed to be folded and put away, and about 1 basket's worth of dirty clothes on the floor waiting for an empty basket. our vacuum and new stand up steam cleaner were in the hallway, b/c our old steam cleaner was still in the closet and it takes up the whole closet. the grass needed to be mowed, but not that badly. my mom and husband had made a veggie garden in the back and had planted flowers in the front. nothing had been to with the weeds and shrubs at the side of the house b/c we hadn't gotten to it yet (my husband works 12 hrs a day as a roofer and i don't have a green thumb and i have 2 kids to take care of). anyways, the landlord told my mom that the place was a pigsty and would be back in a couple of weeks and if the mess wasn't gone he'd evict us. i know it was a bit messy, but it was clutter, not dirt, that had been built up over a couple of days b/c we had been extremely busy. my husband says that the landlord could get a fine if one of the neighbours complained about the weeds in the yard...but the front yard was fine, it was only the side of the house that nobody sees anyway. the carpet is stained in a few spots due to spilled beverages, and stain that was here before we moved in. there is one small hole in a corner wall in the living room due to an accident my 4yo son had (flung himself off the treadmill into the wall and got road rash all over his back). but that can be fixed pretty easily and without much cost. when we moved into this house, it was a complete pigsty, dirt all over the place, and it wasn't cleaned for us before we moved in, which i know by law it should've been. the last ppl that lived here did nothing with the front, side, or back lawns...just let it all weed over. the hand rail up our stairs we thought was brown at first...it's white, it was just full of dirt. fyi, our landlord has been talking with us about buying this house off of him. i kind of get the feeling he is forcing us to do all this stuff with the gardens (the veggie patch was our decision, but he expects us to maintain the rest) so the property value can go up when we buy it, which will make us pay more. i guess i feel a little taken advantage of...landlords are supposed to do the yard work or else supply the lawnmower, etc. and he hasn't. and some of our friends live in way bigger places and pay less than we do and their rent includes utilities. i don't want to move though...i like this house and i like this area, and i like the school my son is going to be going to kindergarten in next year. he had given us 24 hours notice that he'd be coming over to get the rent and look at the place. i cleaned up as much as i could and then had to run out. i didn't think this stuff would be an issue, b/c well, the side yard has never been an issue, and it was a bit of clutter. he's east indian and his wife does everything around the house and keeps it spotless. but their kids are grown and there's really no mess to clean up a million times a day. we don't have a lease. we go month to month. my husband had told him that he would do the yard work, but this guy is just expecting him to work 12-14 hours/day and come home and work more. and he'd told us that we could do whatever we wanted with the house...my mom is painted her suite, we put a fence up. we have talked to him before doing anything, and he said anything was fine. he has no problem with the veggie garden. moreResolved Question: Can I get some opinions on this scene please?
This is the opening scene to a romance book set in ancient Rome during Caesar's second invasion of Britannia. I know it isn't great so I need a little advice. Thanks. Chapter One Tertius Leonis opened the flap to his tent and peered out at the blue, Britannia morning. Patchy, dry grass and the heavy sound of horse hoofs striking the grass greeted him. The distant scent of salty ocean in the unfamiliar lands assaulted his nostrils. He peered up into the pale, early morning sky to see the last of the stars retreating behind the veil of daylight. The familiar red flag bearing a golden bull whipped about in the wind as he stepped out, his helmet in hand. He set his brown eyes toward the edge of camp and rubbed his hand across an unshaven face. “Centurion!” He turned quickly to see a familiar face among unfamiliar things. He extended his hand with a smile. “Rabanus! How are you finding Britannia?” Rabanus shook hands with Tertius. “I prefer it to Gaul, I think. I hear the winters here are not so cold. Though I hope Caesar brings us home before we find out. They say the Britons are a fierce lot, though. More so than the Gauls?” “Why do you ask me?” Tertius placed the helmet under his arm. The bright red horse hair crest tickled his underarm and he adjusted it to the other side. “You’ll see soon enough yourself.” The two slowly walked through the camp as the trumpeter began his morning tune to call out the troops. Rabanus gave a deep laugh and placed his own helmet over raven hair. “I suppose you’re right." moreResolved Question: Help with dream interpretation, please?
I can't control my dreams...this is one of the weirdest I've had. o.O But here you have it. For some reason my PE class was out on a baseball field, but we weren't really doing anything. Naturally the colors I saw vividly were green and brown (grass and dirt on the field). To let you know, I felt a pulse of adrenaline or excitement and tension all throughout the dream, as I know that effects the interp. Some guy in my class came up and said that my crush liked me, so I walked up to him and we started talking. I don't remember very clearly what happened between then and what I remember next, but I remember we were just talking, like friends would. And then he kissed me. (*cough* Farky, this is why I originally didn't want you to see. ono;;;) And that's really all I can remember. Nobody was around when that last part happened, everyone else had spread out to different places of the field and whatnot, but weren't playing. I have my own interpretation, but I would like a second analysis from anybody who could give me one. Thanks. moreVoting Question: What is this called or what do I look for?
After some web ideas, I've decided to do my bedroom in a "relaxing" theme. I'm doing a teal bed set with a gray/brown wall and I'm looking for those white trees (?). I don't even know what to call it. My mom found one at Target, we don't have any idea what's called tho! It's a tall vase (floor standing) with the large white grass (fake) plant looking thing!!! I sounds insane I know...but I don't know what it's called. I've seen them, but clueless where to look now and what to call it. It's like a grass plant, but they are white. By Dr. Jack Hall On a recent fossil collecting trip a friend asked, "What do you think is the most important organism on the Earth?" She knew full well I would answer, "Humans!" since we are the masters of our domain and without rival in the animal world (are we good or what?). She was a bit surprised, and gave me the "Are you nuts?" look, when, without hesitation, I answered, "No doubt about it... hands down the most important organism on this planet is marine algae." "Algae?!?," she said. "Algae?!?," she said. Phytoplankton are tiny microscopic plants - algae - that form the base of the marine food chain. Phytoplankton is most abundant in colder waters where there is an abundance of nutrients. "Yes, Algae," I answered. "Do you want an explanation or are you going to take my word on this?" I asked. "Let me think about it and I'll get back to you on that one," she said. As we continued our hunt for shark's teeth, whale bones, and anything else we could find, she finally broke down. "I don't get it. We can change the world in so many ways…..what has algae done? "Very simple," I said. "Algae allows us and almost every other organism you can think of, living or dead, to be here." Suddenly, she got that look. You know, the one you get when that light bulb in your head clicks on….bing, there it is! "Ah, oxygen, right?" "Correctomundo!" was my very scientific reply. Seaweed are not plants, but are algae. Not only does algae provide much of the Earth's oxygen, they also are the base for almost all marine life. Green algae (pictured) gets its color from chlorophyll and exists on or near the surface where there is plenty of sunlight. Green algae is not as common in the ocean as brown and red seaweed. It is also more closely related to land plants than any other type of algae. It is estimated that between 70% and 80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere is produced by marine plants . Nearly all marine plants are single celled, photosynthetic algae. Yup, that's right, good ol' scum on the pond…green gak…..slip slimein' away. Even marine seaweed is many times colonial algae. They are a bunch of single cells trying to look like a big plant (see seaweed photo), but they are really individuals. We need marine algae a whole lot more than they need us. Think about it….70% to 80% of all the oxygen we breathe comes from algae! Without them we would really be sucking wind, but not for long! At this point you may be saying, "Yo! What about the trees and other land plants?" Well, trees and other land plants are very important, no doubt about it. But for pure survival, we couldn't make it without algae. Why does so much of our oxygen come from algae? Well, first of all, remember that the oceans cover about 71% of this planet and land is only about 29%. If we assume that every square mile of the ocean produces as much oxygen as every square mile of land, then this makes sense. The oceans would produce about 71% and the land 29% of the oxygen we breathe. Looks like we are in the ballpark don't you think? Now the question is, "Are the oceans, indeed, as productive as the land?" At first you might not think so, after all when you look at the land there are trees and bushes and grass and all kinds of plants growing. They must crank out oxygen to beat the band! They do, but also remember that there are many places on land that don't have much in the way of plants. How about Antarctica or the Sahara Desert along with many others? These are pretty good sized chunks of real estate where plants are few and far between. How much oxygen is being pumped out in these areas? I would venture to say there's not enough to keep a pack of wild hamsters (ever seen wild hamsters?) going for very long. So, some areas on land have an abundance of plants and produce a large quantity of oxygen while others have very few plants and produce very little. The same can be said for the oceans. There are some areas that have an abundance of algae living in the waters and other areas that don't. In the ocean there are areas of upwelling where cold, nutrient rich bottom water moves toward the surface. These upwelling waters mix with the surface water and produce an area that is like liquid fertilizer for plants. They go ballistic and there are billions of the little critters in the water just pumping out oxygen left and right. Other areas of the oceans don't have much in the way of nutrients in the water and they are like the deserts on land with very few plants. Not All Are Green: Count Your Algae! There are three types of algae: red, green and brown. Some algae in the ocean are very small and drift in the ocean water. Those algae are phytoplankton. The most abundant type of algae is brown algae, with over 5,000 species (not all are totally brown). Red algae has over 2,000 species, and lives where light is dim, in deeper waters, mostly in temperate and tropical waters. I just got 3 different kinds of ducklings at a feed store ( Khaki, Mallard, and Blue Swedish). Its been roughly 3 or 4 weeks since then when weird stuff started happening. The blue swedish has been found ( twice already) acting as if it is seizing. We have found it with its neck stretched out with its muscles locked and in a daze. another time its neck was flopping around as if it was broken with its legs back beside its head. After the duck loosens up it acts still dazed and drunk. Within minutes the duck is fine. Is my duck having seizures?? Treatment??? The second issue is that I have noticed a change in one of the duck's poop. I still give them starter grain and its only one of the ducks because there isnt a lot of it. The poop is dark brown, almost with a hint of red to it. Do you know what could cause this? Treatments? I have these ducks in a controlled environment with their own swimming pool( small wal-mart kiddy pool), chick starter, and water. I wash out everything twice a day and constantly give them water and food. I even allow them time to go outside and play around in the grass. Usually I just keep them in a large cage with the water and food, but about 5 times a day I put them in their pool. I just don't understand what could be wrong with them. Could anyone help me??? Even though I have three different types of ducks, they are very calm with one another and seem very happy. They never really bully each other unless they are playing in their pool. moreVoting Question: Can Soda such as Coca-Cola ruin grass? Can they cause brown spot? How can I make my grass green again?

Other questions on this topic weren't very specific, so here goes. I live in Southeast Michigan, and a couple of days ago, on June 1st, I discovered pen-sized in diameter holes in my lawn, all over the place. My lawn was not aerated, I know what that looks like. I'm also certain I can rule out moles as this is too tiny to be mole holes (and there are no brown trails through the lawn, and no dirt piles near the sidewalks). The grass about an inch around each hole is yellowing slightly as well, at least where the grass isn't already yellowish. The color of my grass is already quite uneven throughout the lawn - splotches of nice thick green, then lighter green, then darker green, and some areas of yellowing, etc. I want to say that it rained the night before, so the thought of this being earthworms could be plausible I suppose, but I saw no worms on or near the driveway or sidewalks. I've also heard the speculation of this possibly being beetles, which burrow into the soil at night, lay eggs (which will become grubs), and then fly back out, however after doing research, I found that grubs don't typically affect lawns until late July at the earliest. I dug a good 4-5 inches deep around 3 of the holes and found nothing but dirt and clay - no worms, no eggs (that I could see), no grubs, no beetles, no insects of any kind. So now I'm at a loss. What could this be? Any lawn-care experts out there have an opinion? (Note: I have a dog too, in case there might be some sort of critters that are attracted to dog urine/feces in lawns) moreResolved Question: Why is my lawn turning brownish after fertilizing?
I put down Scotts fertilizer with weed control, step 2, last thursday. Now, some parts of the grass are browning. I didn't go over the same spots more than once, but I have a feeling that my spreader disperser's more fertilizer than necessary when I hold down the "throttle" to open up the pit on the bottom of the spreader. Can this be true? Is the browning grass going to be totally dead soon? Is there anything I can do so my lawn doesn't brown any more, any ideas, suggestions, comments?
