The WASP Interview Model

As with so many other functions, there is a specific model or pattern that you should follow during the interview process. One such model is the WASP inter more

Resolved Question: Working with people with disabilities?

I currently work as an employment trainer for people with a range of disabilities including mental health issues running courses covering a number of employment based topics from cv writing to interview skills and job search. I am looking to get some information about furthering my career (as my company do not have much scope for progression) but am struggling to find information about working with disabled people in roles other than as a carer. I am not sure of the exact area that I would like to work other than that I would like to stick to working with people with disabilities. I was considering training to become a social worker but when I poned the university and social sevices for advice, neither was of much assistance. If anyone could suggest places / websites / companies for me to get information it would be much appreciated. If anyone has a similar job or expeience that they are willing to tell of then that would be useful too. Thanks guys.  more

Voting Question: I'm applying for a job.....what do you think of my letter? Honest answers please!?

I know this is a long question but please can you spare just a tinsy winsy bit of time to give me your honest opinions of my letter. I'm applying for Staff Nurse at a Nursing Home. This is the letter i am sending to the company which is advertising for this position: I am writing to you to display my firm interest in the position of Staff Nurse, which you are offering at Castlerock Care Services. In your advertisement, you made it clear that you are looking to recruit experienced qualified nurses to support a large number of Four Seasons Nursing Homes throughout England. I, myself, am a fully qualified registered adult nurse with a considerable amount of experience to my name, thus not only do I wish to display my firm interest in the position of Staff Nurse which you are offering but to also convey that I consider myself a suitable candidate for this position. I have had five years experience as a registered adult nurse after graduating from University, and over this duration have gained most valuable experience by working for the National Health Service within Hospitals. Furthermore, I also have some experience of working in a Nursing Home as I worked for around eight months in one when I was completing my training. Needless to say, supporting people and ensuring that the quality of care, which I am providing, is effectively meeting their needs is something that I am truly passionate about. Therefore, it is ultimately for this reason why I have such an enthusiasm and a genuine love for nursing. I am, at present, looking for a new kind of challenge, as I find challenges most stimulating. Not only this, but I would like the opportunity to be able to take on more responsibilities, thus it is primarily for this reason that I wish to apply for the position of Staff Nurse which you are offering. Working in a nursing home would be a relatively new environment for me, as I am mainly used to working within hospitals, but a change of working environment is something which I do also desire as it once again presents somewhat of a challenge. Becoming a staff nurse, therefore would, for me, be the ultimate progression in my career, thus it is an opportunity which I truly want to undertake, and really do hope that you consider me for this position. In your advertisement, you in fact specify that you require a number of part or full-time staff, and here I would also like to express my desire to be considered on a full-time basis. Moreover, I am a person who is very flexible so would be more than happy to cover day or night time shifts. With this letter, please also find enclosed my Curriculum Vitae. This, hopefully, will provide you with a more in-depth view into the skills and qualifications, which I have to offer you and everyone else at Castlerock Care Services. Thanking you in anticipation So, does it sound ok? Is it convincing? Would it succeed in getting me called back for an interview? Thanks so much for your time xxxxx  more

Voting Question: Help on writing a cover letter?

Hi, I am an accounting and finance graduate looking for my first job in accountancy however i am really struggling to even get an interview at the moment. I think this may be due to the covering letter im sending to companies. This is my covering letter: Post: Graduate Trainee Accountant Dear Sir/ Madam, I am very interested in the above position, particularly as the role relates directly to the experience, skills and qualifications I have gained during my studies and in previous jobs. As summarised in the accompanying CV, my most recent studies includes, completing a BA Accounting and Finance (2:1) degree and ACCA examination, which certainly highlighted all the exciting career prospects that accountancy has to offer me. In addition to my studies, I have gained practical work experience within challenging, customer-facing environments. As part of a team within a leading insurance company, I was responsible for selling car insurances and providing advice to customers. This role allowed me to gain strong negotiation skills and be able to motivate team members to ensure targets are met efficiently. As an Admin Assistant for a language translation company, I communicated by telephone to book appointments with customers and clients, word process multi-lingual documentation and carried out general administration tasks. This gave me the opportunity to enhance my communication, time management and organisational abilities. I am looking for a firm to which I can contribute my energy, enthusiasm and teamwork while receiving training and support for career development in return. I particularly enjoy working on projects and am very driven to achieve targets and goals I set myself. I am confident my experience, combined with a determination and enthusiasm to succeed, will enable me to make a very positive contribution to your company. I enclose my CV and look forward to hearing your favourable reply. Yours Faithfully ....................... Could any make suggestions as to what imdoing wrong?  more

Resolved Question: what would you suggest i do, i want to work in retail, but i lack the experience that is need?

don't actually mind which department/area, i work in, my CV is full of education and studying, yes it's true i have done more training, than i have done work experience, i feel as i am getting older, the chances of me getting the job i want, are getting less and being on jsa, my options are limited, becuase i am at that critical age, there are a lack of local suitable jobs, i feel that is the case, that is the reason why i have suffered through long term unemployment, which is no fault of my own, being 30 and never having had a fully paid full time job, i believe my chances of that ever happening are less than zero, yes i have had more 50 interviews in my life, only being succesful in getting 2 jobs out of 50 interviews is poor, i have very poor social skills, i don't even really know what sort of job is suitable to me anymore, yeah i have done loads of charity work, i have worked for 3 of the largest charities in the UK, doing part time volunteering  more

Resolved Question: Going for pre-employment assessments. Can anyone recommend any sites that I can use to brush up on my Maths?

I have been invited to an assment day for a well-known train company in the south of england. It's for a managerial position and I really want this job! I know I will be facing a Literacy and numeracy test alongside an interview. I am very concerned about the numeracy test as Maths has never been my strong point. I do have Maths GCSE. I also got a First in my statistics module at Uni and Use maths everyday in my current position. But I am very nervous as I have no idea what kind of things to revise or brush up on and I ALWAYS freeze during maths exams. I did well on my uni course as statistics was coursework-based and I spent alot of time interpreting my answers. When presented with a Maths paper my brain just does not want to know - give me the problem in a "real life" setting and I will do just fine. Can anyone reccommend any (free) sites where I can practice and re-learn the appropriate maths skills?  more

Resolved Question: Just been served compulsory redundancy?

I am a 40 year old who has worked in the same office as an administration officer for the last 15 years. A few weeks ago I was served with compulsory redundancy. I do not want to find another job in office administration and want my skills and experience to be used elsewhere. I obtained a degree about 20 years ago in Business Studies. Can you tell me the best way to change my career direction? Do you think it would be a good idea to go to one of these Career Consultants to discuss my career options and also undertake further training where necessary? I heard some Career Consultants charge quite a lot of money for their services. Finally, when I do go for interviews, would age be an issue for the employer when deciding whether or not to give me the job?  more

Resolved Question: new deal training course help?

i have to go to this training center for part of my new deal training. its a 13 week course. i got told before i went that i would have a couple of days for an induction and so they could help us write spec letters or update our CVs and then i would start a work placement in a salon or a busy shop to help me gain customer service skills that would help me get a job. i went today and the induction took 2 hours. after dinner we went into a small classroom with people who were already on the course and told us to make a new CV or write a spec letter for a shop job. i asked when our placements would start and they said in about 4 weeks time. this really annoyed me. my CV is already up2 date and doesnt need changing i just need help with interviews and to get my work experience. most people on the course just arent bothered what happens as long as they get their money. im not sure i can put up with it but as i live alone i cant afford to lose the money. i can see myself getting really stressed as i really thought this course would help me get a job. what can i do?  more

Resolved Question: is this good interview preparation, it's incomplete and need's work on it.?

Where would you like to be in your career five years from now? In five years, I want to have gained solid experience and be developing my skills. Weaknesses What negative thing would you say about yourself? I have been paying close attention to my academic level and have decided to further my education. I have also been paying attention to the sort of work that interest’s me and have decided which area’s I want to pursue. What can you do for us that other candidates can't? Enthusiasm – I have always had the desire to work hard. Working long hours doesn’t bother me. I like to prioritise my workload. I have enjoyed all of the jobs in have done in the past. I like to choose my own routine of work. I like doing challenging tasks Such as:- Serving customers Answering the telephone Deliveries & Collections Making entries into the inventory Balancing the books Potential I have done this sort of work before and I am confident I can do an excellent job. I am prepared to set up the shop, for when new deliveries are on the way. I like to sell things efficiently, so that productivity is kept to a high standard. I like to give customers an insight to what the company is selling, this keeps up customer satisfaction, which means they will return on regular basis. I am comfortable with keeping regular contact with customers. I always make sure I greet the customers politely and treat them fairly. When dealing with a customer, I will endeavour to see to it, that they receive quality service. Commitment I like to keep all of my customers happy and like to show respect to my employers by paying attention to detail. Professionalism I am always polite to my customers and I always respond to their needs in a quick manner. Experience I have recently worked in a charity shop, which is an advantage, because I know how a shop should be prepared. I know how products should be displayed and I know how to provide excellent customer service. Attendance I like to be independent and always turn up at work on time. I will always notify my employers, when I have prior appointments. What Is a Weakness of Yours? I can be a passionate person and I endeavour to do a good job. I sometimes feel the need to push myself the extra mile and do far more than I should. What Do You Think of Your Last Boss? I thought my last boss was great. My last boss was a person who I hold in high regard. She taught me how to be wise, the meaning of showing others respect. She taught me how to deal with change and how to prioritise my workload. Tell Me About Yourself? I have strong organisational skills and I like a prioritised work pattern. I approach my work with enthusiastic attitude and I am prepared to put in the extra 150%. I like to pay attention to my work and communicate to others, how I want to do things. I work well with others. Doing things this way helps me form great working relationships and shows other people that I respect their wishes. Tell me about a project you worked on that required heavy analytical thinking? For the RSPCA, me and my supervisor where given a challenge of making £2000 in one week. We had analyse the situation, then we decided what we where going to do and then, take action. This is the result. Analysis: We thought about the best solutions of making a profit for the company. We both had good Ideas. Decision: What we decided to do in the end was. First we started a half price sale in both shops, which lasted a full week. Then we endeavoured to make flyers for both shops, to attract attention. Then we delivered the flyers to all of the shops in town. Having two shops to work in, made the difference, because we could sell the furniture and clothes in one shop and sell the clothes and bric a brac in the other. What made the task in hand much more achievable was the pricing system we used for the furniture. We decide to price to sofa’s, wall unit’s, futons, cabinets, welsh dressers, wardrobes etc @£60 or above. With the clothes, we priced those @£2 for evening wear, shoe. The leather jackets, were priced @£6, the trouser, skirts, tops, sweaters and blouses @£1. We had a lot of stock in that week, so we complete the task, with no trouble at all. Result. Doing this task brought me and my supervisor closer. We gained a few extra customers as well and people where coming to use, to find out about the company. Weaknesses? I generally don’t fail. I have identified the fact that I need more qualifications, so I have that, as well as finding a job. I am going to enrol on a few courses this year Why did you leave your last job?" I had a really good working relationship with all of my staff members, but there where there were a lot of new changes going on and my supervisor, decided it was time to part company. We had a new supervisor, who wanted to cut staff numbers. I was looking for a change myself and feel it’s time to face new challenges. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? For my previous job, I liked doing the deliveries. So I am hoping for opportunity of helping to display products in the shop. What are your strengths? I like the challenge of a demanding job. I like to be given a heavy workload. I am a flexible person. My previous job proves that I am capable of doing a job that is rewarding. I can multitask. In previous job I had to sometimes do several jobs at once. I had to do things like:- Clean the furniture and then vacuum the shop, at the same time. When we dealt with customers over the counter, we had a policy of dealing with the customer and then doing your previous duty. When customers wanted to know dates of events, like the yearly dog show, they would expect you to look at the calendar and serve them, at the same time. There are other strengths I have, for example. I can serve customers and watch the shop, at the same time. Why do you want to work here? What qualities do you think will be required for this job? What can you contribute? Why do you want to work for this company? What interests you about our product (or service)? What do you know about this company? Do you consider yourself successful? How long would you expect to work for us if hired? As long as we both feel I’m doing a good job. Describe your work ethic? Determination to get the job done and work hard but enjoy your work How would you know you were successful on this job? You set high standards for yourself and meet them Are you willing to work overtime? Nights? Weekends? What motivates you to do your best on the job? What is more important to you: the money or the work? Money is always important, but the work is the most important. There is no better answer. What would your previous supervisor say your strongest point is? There are numerous good possibilities: Loyalty, Energy, Positive attitude, Leadership, Team player, Expertise, Initiative, Patience, Hard work, Creativity, Problem solver Explain how you would be an asset to this organization? Interview Questions Who will I report to? What do you expect me to do in the first 6 months? What level of performance do you expect from me? What training do you provide? When will you decide on the appointment?  more
